Our Story,
Layer by Layer.

Born in the middle of a pandemic, Butter Layers grew from a small home
kitchen into Kota Kinabalu’s favorite artisanal bakery.

THE BEGINNING

It Started with a Dream (and a Lot of Butter)

The journey began in December 2020, during the height of the pandemic, when long-held plans to open a pastry shop were suddenly halted. Instead of waiting, the founder started baking from home- driven by a love for pastries and a desire to offer something better to our community in Kota Kinabalu, where truly high quality pastries were scarce. Having lived abroad and experienced authentic French pastries, she knew the difference that real butter, proper technique and fresh baking could make. Her passion for quality became the heart of their early online venture.

THE GROWTH

From Home Kitchen to Halal-Certified Bakery

The foundations of the business were laid even earlier, in 2019, when the founder returned from France with hopes of studying pastry there. When the pandemic made that impossible, together with her sister, she pursued professional training at a renowned pastry school in KL, learning directly from world pastry champions. Those skills, combined with perseverance, transformed their small home-based project into a growing business rooted in craftsmanship and tradition. Today it stands not just a bakery but as a commitment to creating pastries that offer comfort, joy, and a reminder that good things can rise even in difficult times.
